Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is PRP?

This stands for platelet-rich plasma. This is produced when a sample of a person’s blood is taken and spun in a machine called a centrifuge. This separates it into ‘Plasma’ which is rich in proteins including factors for growth and rejuvenation. These are applied usually for cosmetic treatments into the hair and skin.

  • How does PRP Hair Loss Treatment Work?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) works by stimulating the hair cells (hair follicles) through the action of natural growth factors. These growth factors are released by the specialised cells called platelets which are concentrated in PRP.

PRP is then injected into the scalp which in turn increases blood flow to the treated area, strengthens hair and stimulates growth of new hairs.

Microneedling further stimulates hair follicles and works in synergy with the PRP

  • Is PRP hair treatment suitable for everyone? Who should not have it?

Whilst PRP hair loss treatment is considered a safe procedure suitable for most people, make sure you discuss any concerns with a hair loss specialist prior to undertaking any therapy. There are some conditions that preclude you from being able to have PRP therapy:

    • Heavy smokers
    • Platelet dysfunction syndromes
    • Thrombocytopenia
    • Hypofibrinogenaemia
    • Sepsis or acute infections
    • Chronic liver disease
    • Cancer
    • If you are on blood thinning medication.
    • Pregnancy, lactating or breastfeeding.
  • Does it hurt?

Premium numbing cream is used and while pain thresholds different the procedure has been described more often as causing mild discomfort only.

  • How long is the Procedure?

PRP treatment to the hair or for a facial usually takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

  • Are there side effects from PRP hair treatment?

There are potential side effects from PRP hair treatment, but they are typically mild and most people experience no negative effects at all. The most common side effects include discomfort, bruising, and redness, but these typically disappear within a few days. Occasionally, some people may experience a temporary increase in hair growth or shedding, but this is usually minor and will go away after the treatment has ended.

  • What Result are there from PRP Hair Loss Treatment?

Androgenic alopecia cannot be cured by Platelet Rich Plasma, therefore multiple PRP therapy sessions will be needed to maintain the results.

  • What is the Recovery time?

There is no recovery period associated with the PRP treatment. One can resume daily routine immediately after the PRP treatment. It is advised to avoid using harsh chemicals or dyes for at least 2 days.

  • What is Important to Note About PRP Hair Loss Treatment?

Not every type of hair loss can be treated. It can take months before you see results from treatment. No one treatment works for everyone, even two people with the same type of hair loss. Sometimes, hair loss is stubborn and requires trying different treatments before finding one that works.

  • What is Biotin?

Biotin is Vitamin B7 which helps maintain a protein called Keratin. This is found in the body, in particular in the hair, skin and nails. It can be given alongside PRP as a ‘Booster’ to air restorative and regenerative treatments for hair or through a facial.

  • What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is the process of creating multiple very superficial puncture sites on the skin of the face or the scalp. This helps promote collagen production and enhance the effect of the PRP treatment. This is also a ‘Booster’ to promote rejuvenation.

  • How long does it take to work?

Results especially for PRP facials can begin to be noticed from 72 hours onwards but generally are most noticeable 4-6 weeks after the treatment.

  • How often should I have it?

The beneficial effects of PRP last around 2-3 months and therefore a minimum of 4 treatments are recommended in a year to be able to get optimal results.

Thereafter 3 treatments aa year are advised.
